Privacy Policy — ClarityRead

Last updated: 2025-10-23

Quick Summary (TL;DR)

Who I am

ClarityRead is created and maintained by me, Tonna Agburu,an independent developer. I built this extension to make reading on the web easier through dyslexia-friendly fonts, reflowed reading, read-aloud, and a local summarizer.

Summary — no remote data transfer by default

ClarityRead does not send page content or user selections to any remote server by default. The summarizer and text-to-speech use only your browser’s built-in capabilities. All user data described below is stored locally in your browser unless you explicitly enable an optional cloud feature (which will always ask for your consent first).

What I store locally

What I do NOT collect

Optional cloud features (explicit opt-in only)

If optional cloud features are added in the future (for example, server-side summarization or backup), they will be clearly marked in the UI and will only be used after you give explicit consent. If you enable such a feature, ClarityRead will explain exactly what data is sent and to which host. You can disable these features at any time in the extension settings.

Text-to-speech

ClarityRead uses your browser’s built-in speech synthesis (the Web Speech API). The voices available are provided by your browser or operating system. No audio or text is sent to external services for text-to-speech unless you explicitly enable an optional cloud TTS feature (which will always prompt you first).

Security & retention

Data stored locally remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the extension. If you enable any optional cloud feature, the retention policy for that data will be described in the opt-in dialog. I recommend avoiding uploading highly sensitive personal information to any service.
